Possible steering problems and causes

Road wander

  • Tire pressure incorrect or unequal left to right
  • Steering linkage components loose or worn
  • Wheel bearings improperly adjusted or worn
  • Front end alignment out of specification
  • Dry fifth wheel

External oil leakage

  • Oil can run from the leak source to a low point — trace fittings, hoses, pump and gear carefully
  • A leak from the vent plug at the side cover indicates a failed sector shaft oil seal

Lost motion (lash) at the steering wheel

  • Steering wheel loose on the shaft
  • Loose connection between gear, intermediate column and steering column
  • Steering gear loose on the frame
  • Pitman arm loose on the output shaft
  • Steering linkage components loose or worn

On-vehicle adjustments & maintenance

Sector shaft adjustment

  1. Center the steering wheels and remove the drag link.
  2. Center the gear — with no timing mark, count turns full left to full right and come back half.
  3. Back the sector adjusting screw out until movement is felt at the pitman arm, then turn in until it just stops.
  4. Do not over-tighten — tighter is not better. Stop as soon as no movement is felt.

Pressure relief / unloading valves

  1. These valves cut pressure as the wheels reach end of turn.
  2. They keep the pump from running at maximum relief against the axle stops.
  3. Set per the gear manufacturer — see pages 6–7 of the guide.

Ross TAS automatic poppet valves

  1. For new and remanufactured gears only. Lift front wheels, linkage connected, engine at idle.
  2. Steer to full travel each way against the axle stops with firm rim pull (~40 lb on a 20" wheel).
  3. Release, shut off engine, and finish per the step-by-step procedure on pages 8–9.

Flushing the system

  1. Lift front wheels. Disconnect the return line into a container and plug the reservoir.
  2. Disable ignition and crank while turning the wheels left to right.
  3. Never let the reservoir run dry — keep adding clean fluid until it runs clean.
